And 20% of that total is just the cost of restarting the production line. So sad...in my mind, the F-22 just came out and the F-35 was rushed into production way too quickly, with too little vetting (remember the F-22 vs F-23 competitions that went on for years?)

I grew up in the age of Jet Fighter II, so I remember the F-22/F-23 competition fondly.

Nope, though keep in mind that when they made that decision, most of the negative stuff people are saying about the F-35 program was being said about F-22 program.

While that’s true, at least it would have left the future open for a F-22E Strike Raptor. In my mind, if you’re going to go through decades of delays and problems, at least pick the design most capable of growth in the future.
